Leisure equipment lending
Did you know that you can borrow the following leisure equipment from select locations of the Greater Sudbury Public Library? All you need is a current GSPL card.
Basketball lending
You want to borrow a basketball to play? Visit the Garson or Valley East libraries and sign a waiver to check out a basketball for the week. Basketball is not renewable nor available for delivery or holds, and costs $20 to replace. Let's break a sweat and play ball!
Bicycle pump lending
Bicycle pumps are now available at every library branch. Enjoy your eco-friendly commute with full tires - and get some air at the library on the way to your destination. Waivers are available to sign on your initial visit and in-library use bicycle pumps are available whenever you need to re-fill your tires.
Bicycle tool lending
Bicycle tools are available for in branch use at the Chelmsford, Lively, Main, New Sudbury, South End and Valley East libraries.
- The bicycle tool kit with chain rivet extractor, hex key wrench with square adaptor, pedal wrench, bottom bracket wrench, chain ring nut wrench, patch kit, hex key wrench set (6 sizes), freewheel turner and lock ring wrench, multipurpose master link tool, cartridge BB tool, lock ring removal tool, spoke wrench, dust cap wrench, 3 hub spanners, 2 piece metal tire lever set, crank puller, flat 5mm Phillips screwdriver, 3 mm flat screwdriver, 3 T wrenches, tools manual.
Bring your library card, sign a waiver form at the library branch, and repair your bike(s) using our outdoor rack. After tweaking your bike(s), be sure return tools at the checkout desk, and keep enjoying the fresh air on your new tune-ups!
Explorer kits
Explorer Kits are designed to connect families to nature and meaningful outdoor experiences. Activities in the kit are fun for the whole family, but generally geared towards ages 5-14. Kits are available until September and come with an information sheet for how to get a free family day pass to Kivi Park, a free canoe rental, a trail map, a bookmark, and nature journal prompt pages for fun activities to engage your family in. There is at least 1 explorer kit available per library branch and they are loaned out for a 1-week period.
Hiking Poles
Hit the trails with these adjustable, rugged, lightweight, multipurpose poles. Designed to give you the performance edge by reducing stress on your knees, hip, and back while providing extra stability on uneven terrain. Can be used for hiking, trekking, skiing, snowshoeing, and Nordic walking. Comes with 1 small basket for non-snow covered terrain and 1 large snow basket for snow covered terrain. All of our library branches have 2 pairs of hiking poles to loan out. Bring your library card, sign a waiver form at the library branch, and enjoy the outdoors! Hiking poles loans are for a 1-week period, so get outside, be active and explore nature!
Nature Discovery Backpacks
Borrow a Nature Discovery Backpack and get ready for your family's next outdoor adventure! These backpacks are Ontario-curriculum linked and contain activities and field equipment to help you explore local nature and the wildlife that live there. The backpack activities are targeted for grades 7-12 but will be enjoyed by adults, too!
Ontario Parks Day-Use Vehicle Permits
Ontario Parks has provided free vehicle permits for members of the Greater Sudbury Public Library to enjoy its network of provincial parks. Use your library card to borrow one of our provincial park passes from May 1 to December 31st.
Outdoor games

- Playing outside is a great source of Vitamin D, improves mental health, reduces stress, and enhances sleep.
- The collection offers opportunities for all ages to engage with family and friends outdoors for free!
Pickleball equipment
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in North America. It is fun, easy to learn, and can be played at all ages. Pickleball can be played in singles or doubles and combines elements of badminton, ping-pong, and tennis.
Tackle share
Fishing is an inexpensive, family-friendly pastime that is easy to learn, practiced almost anywhere, and enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. The Greater Sudbury area is ripe with fishing opportunities for all! GSPL partner - Ramakko’s Source for Adventure donated and maintains fishing equipment for this program. The Tackle Share kit includes 1 fishing rod and 1 tackle box in either children or adult sizing. Items are first come, first served at the Capreol, Chelmsford, Dowling, Levack/Onaping, Main, and New Sudbury libraries, and returned where loaned out.
Tennis equipment
Tennis can be played in singles or doubles and equipment comes in two sizes: Adult and Youth. Tennis equipment is checked out as single racquets, except family packs which contain 2 adult and 2 youth each.
