Get a library card
Who can get a library card?
- All citizens of the City of Greater Sudbury are entitled to and encouraged to have a library card.
- Library membership is free to residents of the City of Greater Sudbury, and members of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Wahnapitae First Nations.
- An active student of a post-secondary institution within the City of Greater Sudbury
- Outside of the City of Greater Sudbury, non-resident cards are available for $5.00 a month or $20.00 for the year.
A valid library card is required to borrow library materials as well as to book time on the library's public Internet stations. When registering for a library card, cardholders agree to follow all rules and regulations of the Greater Sudbury Public Library (GSPL).
How much does it cost to get a library card?
- Library membership is free to residents of the City of Greater Sudbury, and members of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Wahnapitae First Nations.
- Residents who live outside of the City of Greater Sudbury may purchase a library card for the following terms: one month - $5; one year - $20.00.
How do I get a library card?
Valid identification is required to apply for a GSPL Passport membership. Valid identification must be presented at the branch during the application process or at the request of GSPL staff for card renewal.
Acceptable forms of identification are listed in Table 1 below. We require either a single piece of Type 1 identification or a combination of one Type 2 identification and one Type 3 identification.
All identification must be current (i.e., not expired). Type 3 documents must be dated and issued within the last 2 months.
A parent or guardian is required to provide valid identification for children under the age of 13 who wish to obtain a Passport membership.

If you are not able to meet the identification requirements, you may be eligible for an Access Membership.
Visitors cards
If you are a visitor to Greater Sudbury, please bring a piece of identification to obtain a one-time or temporary card that will allow you access to our public computer stations.
- One-time cards are valid for a two-hour session on the day you obtain the card. You may only login once, even if you do not use all of your allotted time.
- Temporary cards may be obtained by visitors for up to 14 days. These cards allow two hours daily of computer usage.
How do I renew my expired card?
- Active Passport memberships do not expire.
- Access memberships expire after 1 year from the date of issue.
- Non-Resident memberships expire at the end of the month or year they have paid for.
- Inactive library memberships with 4 years of no activity are automatically deleted.
- Members in good standing may request that their account be deleted at any time.
- To renew an expired or inactive account, please visit any GSPL location to update and reactivate your card.
