Volunteering at the library
Volunteers provide a unique and vital role in the delivery of library services in our community. At Greater Sudbury Public Library (GSPL), we are committed to offering a variety of enticing volunteer opportunities for both adults and teens throughout our 13 locations.
Becoming a volunteer
To become a volunteer at GSPL, you will need to complete the following steps:- Review the Current Volunteer Opportunities for Adults or Teens to determine your area of interest
- Complete an online application form or print an application and drop it off at your nearest location
- Complete a brief intake interview determining if volunteering at GSPL is right for you
- Receive an orientation including tour of the building, volunteer space, introduction to the staff, review of policies, procedures and health and safety basics
- Receive additional job orientation and training from your in-branch volunteer coordinator related specifically to your volunteer role
Recognizing our volunteers
VolunTeens will receive an official Letter of Reference upon completion of their placement at the library, and a confirmation of the total amount of time spent at the library if the hours are to count as part of the Community Service Hours requirement for high school graduation.

Adult volunteer opportunities
GSPL's volunteer program strives to connect youth with the library, and offers the opportunity for young adults to connect with other adults and seniors in their own community in a variety of ways.
The VolunTeen Program also provides volunteer roles for students in Grades 9-12 currently attending any high school in the City of Greater Sudbury so that they may fulfill their Community Service Hours requirement before graduation.

GardenerA number of Greater Sudbury Public Library locations rely on volunteers each year to care for small planters and flower beds alongside or in front of their facilities. Plants, small hand tools and watering supplies are provided by the location, the volunteer is asked to provide ongoing tending between spring and fall. A seasonal commitment is preferred at the following locations: Azilda, Coniston, Chelmsford, Garson, New Sudbury, and South End. Homebound DeliveryIf you have a few free hours each month, you may be interested in volunteering for the Homebound Service. Local HistoryAssist in preserving materials of historic value to the community through the production of preservation-quality scans of publications, microfilm, photographs, slides and negatives. This position is limited to the Main Library due to the specialized equipment required and the unique nature of this collection. Program HelperSome of our ongoing in-branch programs could use a helping hand with preparation, set up and take down. Special Event HelperAssist Library Staff with the preparation, set up and take down of a large scale library event. The help required will be tailored to the needs of each event and directed by Library Programming Staff in charge of the event, or their designate. Tech TutorTech-savvy volunteers can assist seniors and other adults to navigate new devices and technologies, or work with them in a group or individual setting to enhance basic knowledge of computers, typing or mousing and internet skills.
