Chromebook Lending Guidelines

  • Chromebooks are loaned on a first-come, first-served basis and may not be reserved.
  • Chromebooks are for in-library use only. A device will be deactivated and will no longer work if removed from library property.
  • You must have a Greater Sudbury Public Library card (Passport) in good standing to borrow a Chromebook.
  • To check out a Chromebook, you must read, understand, and sign the Greater Sudbury Public Library Chromebook Waiver and Lending Agreement.
  • Minors (patrons under 18) may use their library card to check out a Chromebook provided the Guardian, to whose account they are linked, has an agreement on file giving that minor permission.
  • Library staff reserves the right to change these guidelines at any time and/or revoke Chromebook use as needed.

Loan Periods and Use Procedures

  • Chromebooks can be borrowed for in-library use only. Mice, external DVD drives, and power supplies are also available for in-library borrowing. Ear buds are available for purchase at the Main Desk.
  • Chromebooks can be borrowed for up to 2 hours at a time. No renewals, no reserves. Failure to return a Chromebook on time will result in overdue fines ($10 per hour). Replacement cost for a Chromebook is currently $400.
  • Chromebooks cannot be loaned to anyone but the card holder. Patrons cannot use a friend or family member's card to borrow a Chromebook.
  • A basic knowledge of computers is recommended. Staff can provide simple instructions and assistance. Written material on some common functions are available.
  • Chromebooks (and all borrowed accessories) must be returned to a staff member directly, not placed in the drop box, or left on the counter.
  • Chromebooks must be returned to the Main Desk at least 15 minutes prior to the library closing (even if the Chromebook has been checked out for less than 2 hours). Chromebooks may not be checked out 30 minutes prior to the library closing.
  • There are no internal disk drives on the Chromebooks. In order to save your work, you must use a personal external USB drive or the cloud server.
  • All apps, files, and downloads are automatically deleted upon exit of each session.
